Welcome to the Wonderful World of Bees!

Getting started with beekeeping can be an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. At Dry Creek Beekeeping, we’re a small, family-run business that loves helping others discover the magic of honeybees. Whether you want to raise bees for honey, to help pollinate your garden, or simply to learn something new with your family, we’re here to help you take those first steps. This beginner-friendly guide shares some basic tips and explains how our hands-on Beekeeping Bootcamp can give you the confidence to start your very own hive.

Starting Out: Why Two Hives Are Better Than One

If you're thinking about becoming a beekeeper, we recommend starting with two hives instead of just one. Here’s why: if something goes wrong in one hive (like the queen disappears or the bees get sick), the other hive can often help save the day. You can share resources like brood or eggs from a healthy hive to help the struggling one bounce back. It’s a great way to learn problem-solving and gives you a safety net while you're still figuring things out. Beekeeping is part science, part art, and having two hives lets you see more of how things work.

You won’t need to spend every day in the hives, either. Plan for about 30 minutes to an hour every couple of weeks. It’s a manageable hobby that gets you outside and connected with nature. While there are some startup costs (like getting your gear and your bees), many folks find beekeeping to be pretty affordable compared to other hobbies. If you're looking to save money, check out secondhand equipment—just make sure it’s cleaned and safe for the bees.

Why Join a Beekeeping Bootcamp?

Learning on your own can be overwhelming, especially with all the conflicting info out there. That’s where our Beekeeping Bootcamp comes in. It’s a hands-on, small-group workshop where we walk you through everything you need to know to get started. You'll learn directly from experienced beekeepers (like us!), ask questions, handle real equipment, and even get into a hive with live bees.

We designed our bootcamp to be approachable and beginner-friendly. Whether you’re a curious first-timer or someone who’s been watching YouTube videos for months, this class helps turn all that research into real-world know-how. Plus, you’ll meet other beginners, share stories, and build a community. Beekeeping can throw some curveballs, and it really helps to have folks you can turn to for advice.

We also recommend joining your local beekeeping club—there's always something new to learn, and veteran beekeepers are full of helpful tips. You’ll hear a lot about things like varroa mites or treating for disease, and having that local support makes it much easier to keep your bees happy and healthy.

What You’ll Learn at Bootcamp

Our Beekeeping Bootcamp covers all the basics and then some. You’ll learn how to set up your hive, care for your bees through the seasons, extract honey and wax, and spot signs of trouble before they get serious. We also talk a lot about sustainable beekeeping and the importance of protecting pollinators.

The hands-on part is a game-changer. Opening a hive for the first time is a little intimidating, but we’ll be right there with you, showing you what to look for and how to stay calm around the bees. You’ll also go home with helpful printed guides and a list of trusted places to buy supplies.

One important thing to know: beekeeping isn't one-size-fits-all. Since honeybees aren’t native to the U.S., there are different approaches depending on where you live. That’s why learning from experienced beekeepers who understand your local environment makes such a difference.

Let’s Get You Started!

We’re passionate about helping others get started with bees, and we believe beekeeping should be fun, fulfilling, and accessible. Our Beekeeping Bootcamp is a great way to build your confidence, ask all your questions, and see if beekeeping is a good fit for you and your family.
